I’m so excited to participate in my first spin for The Classics Club, especially since I’ve fallen behind on some of my reading goals.
Some of you may be wondering what “spin” means. No, it doesn’t involve me spinning around with a bunch of classics on my head (although that could be fun I guess). The idea is to select 20 random books from your Classics Club List and post them before Monday, April 22. On Monday, a number will be chosen which reveals which title must be read by May 31. Who says book lovers don’t know how to party?
Without further ado, here are my picks:
- The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood
- Mansfield Park by Jane Austen
- Peter Pan by J.M. Barrie
- The Sword of Shannara by Terry Brooks
- Possession by A.S. Byatt
- The Baron in the Trees by Italo Calvino
- Don Quixote by Miguel de Cervantes
- Death on the Nile by Agatha Christie
- This Side of Paradise by F. Scott Fitzgerald
- Jude the Obscure by Thomas Hardy
- The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne
- Salem’s Lot by Stephen King
- Love in the Time of Cholera by Gabriel García Márquez
- Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand
- The Last Man by Mary Shelley
- The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck
- Gulliver’s Travels by Jonathan Swift
- Slaughterhouse-Five by Kurt Vonnegut
- The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde
- Orlando by Virginia Woolf
I tried to create a balanced list with a mix of shorter and longer works along with original reads and some old favorites. It helps that several of my picks are books I need to read for my 2019 challenges.
Nothing left to do but wait for the announced number. Wish me luck fellow readers.
Update: The results are in, and it looks like I will be reading The Picture of Dorian Gray. This will be my first time reading Oscar Wilde, so that’s exciting. Next month, I will attempt to give it the review it deserves.
Some of these would challenge me due to their size. I’m still trudging through Don Quixote. I love it, but it’s soooooo long. Atlas Shrugged is another tome.
Good luck.

I’m nervous about reading one of these longer works, as I haven’t had much success in the past. I’ve been wanting to read Don Quixote for years so hoping that gets accomplished soon.

I like your list! Smiled when I saw Salem’s Lot, as I’m one of what Stephen King calls his ‘constant readers.’

I’ve been a constant reader of King since I was a teen. I’ve got three of his books on my list!

Me too! That is, a constant reader since I was a teen. He’s brought me so many happy hours of reading, and years of feeling terrified of imaginary things 🙂

Good luck! I haven’t been very successful in the past, but I always try again. I have Orlando and Dorian Gray on my list as well.

I haven’t always been successful either. I just stick to the old motto to keep trying. Best wishes on your future reading!

Congratulations on attempting your first spin. My favourites would be Don Quixote, The Picture of Dorian Gray and Gulliver’s Travels. The latter two are especially interesting each in their own unique way. I hope you have a great spin and get the book you want!

Welcome to the spins! I love the variety of your list, although, I’d personally shy away from the longer books. It’s not most peoples favorite Austen, but I’m a fan of Mansfield Park, and Agatha Christie is always fun. I hope you get something you love. Happy reading!

Honestly, I’m hoping it doesn’t turn out to be one of the longer reads. I may think this one through a little more carefully next time.

Interesting list! Atlas Shrugged plunged me into a lot of thought as a teenager.
I used to be excited about big books, but these days I find them daunting. I’m interested in reading Don Quixote. I have read the first few chapters. Yet, I still keep putting it off when I go to pick it up to continue reading!
Anyway, I wish you all the very best on your first spin!! 😀

We had a number of titles in common! I purposefully left Don Quixote off my list. You got one of the ones I was hoping for! I’m not so thrilled with my own number in this spin. Good luck!
