This year isn’t even over, and I’m already planning ahead for challenges for next year! After a two-year hiatus (while he worked on his doctoral dissertation), Adam over at RoofBeamReader.com is resurrecting his TBR Pile Challenge.
The rules are quite simple: Select 12 books that have been sitting on your shelves for at least one year. These books have to be listed by January 15, 2018 in order to officially take part in the challenge. Also, don’t worry in case you struggle with finishing one or two of the books on your list as you are allowed to select two alternate books. This challenge is going to be so much fun! Not only do you get to knock a dozen books off your TBR list, but Adam also offers prizes as well! Just remember to go to the website above and sign up!
Updated 12/31/18: I finished a total of 10 books including my alternates. Click on the title to connect to my review!
My 2018 TBR Pile Challenge List:
- If on a winter’s night a traveler by Italo Calvino
- I Capture the Castle by Dodie Smith
- Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison
- The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt
- The Windup Girl by Paolo Bacigalupi
- Carrie by Stephen King
- The Trial by Franz Kafka
- Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov
- Don Quixote by Miguel de Cervantes
- The Eye of the World by Robert Jordan
- The Old Curiosity Shop by Charles Dickens
- Moby Dick by Herman Melville
Alternate Selections:
- The Bone Clocks by David Mitchell
- The Marriage Plot by Jeffrey Eugenides
I tried to find a good mix of titles for this challenge. It’s feeling pretty balanced. I’m all kinds of excited to participate in this challenge! You should join too and spread the word. You might even win a prize! CLICK HERE to join. Also, congratulations Adam for finishing your doctorate! Here’s to many more challenges for 2018!
Your list is fantastic! Some of my absolute favorites…. quite a few chunksters, too. And I have been meaning to read that Italo Calvino book for so long. I think I have bought and given it away twice, without reading it first either time. Lol

I’ve had that Calvino book forever. I’m determined to finally get it checked off!

How fantastic to see I Capture the Castle, one of my absolute favourites! I wonder if you’ve seen the film? I think the two work perfectly together – I’m envious of you getting to know it/them!!

I have not seen the film! I will definitely have to watch it after reading the book. Thank you so much for the suggestion!

I have Carrie to read this year – I’m really looking forward to it! I’m super intrigued by I Capture The Castle – I’ve heard so much about it in the past few weeks that I’ll have to check it out. Enjoy your reading!

Pingback: Book Challenges 2018 – I Would Rather Be Reading
I think this is the first TBR Pile list I’ve seen where I haven’t read a single one of the books – though I have checked The Bone Clocks out of the library six or seven times and not got round to it yet. Your list is fantastic! I’ve heard only good things about The Windup Girl and If On A Winter’s Night a Traveller, and you have reminded me how much I want to read them both. All the best with the challenge 🙂

Eclectic list! I think it’s great that you have so many varied choices. I Capture the Castle is wonderful, and the movie adaptation is also great — Bill Nighy is especially well cast as the father. I should probably watch it again soon. I also loved The Goldfinch. Good luck with the reading challenge!

What a great list. Wheel of Time is one of my favorites, so you’re in for a treat there (if you have the patience for it). David Mitchell is one of my favorite authors, too, so I’m secretly hoping you have to bump something for the Bone Clocks.
Good luck, Joel. I’ll be following along.

Thanks Rick! I’ve managed to complete two on my list and hoping I might actually be able to do all 14 choices! I love David Mitchell and am excited to read ‘Bone Clocks.’ Best of luck with the challenge!

Great choices! Out of the books you mentioned I’ve read Carrie and The Goldfinch, and I really enjoyed both of them; I hope you’ll like them as well! If on a Winter’s Night a Traveler is on my tbr pile as well, even if I actually didn’t include it in my challenge list … but hopefully I’ll be able to read it anyway!
